Book Days "Föhr erLesen 2024": Reading with Matthias Egeler. In every era, elves and fairies show us how our fears and desires of the time are reflected in the changing ideas of the supernatural.
Matthias Egeler offers an entertaining and competent overview of the history of elves and fairies: from their origins in Celtic and Nordic myths to the world of the Icelandic "elf commissioners" to J.R.R. Tolkien, Harry Potter and modern fantasy literature.
Matthias Egeler is Professor of Old Scandinavian Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt. His research specialisms include Icelandic folk tales, Old Norse mythology and Arthurian literature.
Admission free - however, we kindly ask you to free ticket booking via ticket2Go as a reservation and admission control.
Whether on Greenland, the Faroe Islands or the North Sea islands.... They have always existed: Strong island women! When their husbands, sons or brothers were away at sea for long periods of time, they coped with everyday life alone. To cope with the often hard labour, they joined forces and developed an extraordinary independence for their time. The resulting self-confidence became part of their identity and is still evident in today's generation. (...) Until 22 September, further exciting readings and "erLesene events" on the spoken and written word will take place throughout the island in cooperation with the FTG, the municipality of Nieblum, the town library, the Friesen Museum, the Rüm Hart School, church communities, the Föhr-Amrum hospice initiative and local bookshops.
