Culture Island of Föhr
Of Halligfrauen and travelling to faraway places
16.09.2024, 7 pm
Book Days "Föhr erLesen 2024": Scenic reading with Mareike Böhmer and Anna Mariani. The North Frisian Islands are characterised by the sea. Seafaring in particular played a major role in the 17th and 18th centuries, followed later by emigration to America. It is known that many of the men went to sea: whaling or merchant shipping. But what about the women?
What did their everyday life look like? Did they stay on the island or did they also see the wider world? On the trail of the island women, we follow, among others, a 17th century Halligfrau, the wife of a sailor in the 19th century and a traveller at the beginning of the 20th century.
Föhr erLesen is organised in cooperation with the Equal Opportunities Officer of the district of North Friesland, the Ferring Foundation and the Föhr Landfrauen.

Admission free - nevertheless we ask for a free ticket booking via ticket2Go as a reservation and admission control.
Whether on Greenland, the Faroe Islands or the North Sea islands.... They have always existed: Strong island women! When their husbands, sons or brothers were away at sea for long periods of time, they coped with everyday life alone. To cope with the often hard labour, they joined forces and developed an extraordinary independence for their time. The resulting self-confidence became part of their identity and is still evident in today's generation. (...) Until 22 September, further exciting readings and "erLesene events" on the spoken and written word will take place throughout the island in cooperation with the FTG, the municipality of Nieblum, the town library, the Friesen Museum, the Rüm Hart School, church communities, the Föhr-Amrum hospice initiative and local bookshops.
