Föhr - Frisian Caribbean

My North Sea island of Föhr: Miles of white sandy beaches, beautiful green nature and a pleasant maritime climate favoured by the Gulf Stream: the North Sea island of Föhr is a holiday paradise for young and old - which is why it is affectionately known in our family as the "Frisian Caribbean".

The beauty and diverse natural landscape on Föhr are certainly one reason why there are so many loyal holiday guests here. Another reason is the fact that Föhr has the most hours of sunshine after Freiburg. The island also impresses with its authentic and friendly people. So it's no wonder that those who come to Föhr once keep coming back - preferably every year.

The island of Föhr is surrounded on all sides by the Wadden Sea. Since 2009, the Wadden Sea has been officially protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site - and for good reason: the Wadden Sea is unique and diverse worldwide. The tides alternate every six hours, changing the landscape almost magically at every moment.

More than 10,000 animal and plant species live in this unique habitat. Some 250 of them are found only in the Wadden Sea and nowhere else in the world. Sea scorpions and lugworms can be marvelled at here, as can mussels and shore crabs.

In order to offer the highly sensitive ecosystem the best possible protection, some areas of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park are now closed to visitors. But don't worry: the majority of the national park will remain freely accessible to visitors in the future - a natural phenomenon to touch, marvel at and experience! For example, there are trips on small excursion boats and guided mudflat walks to the seal banks. Here you can get up to 100 metres close to the cute marine mammals, which are at least as curious about their visitors as the other way round.

You can find more information about the island and activities around Föhr here.
